How to measure a lawn from the satellite view

  1. Find the yard. Search the address, or drag and zoom the map until the lot fills it.
  2. Tap around the grass. Place a point at each corner of the turf you cut, and a few more along curved edges. Drag any point to adjust it.
  3. Close the shape. Tap the first point again, or press Done. The square footage updates as you go.
  4. Add the rest. Use “Add a lawn area” for the back yard or the strip by the street, and “Cut out a bed or pool” for anything inside a lawn that you don’t mow.

Measure the grass, not the lot. The lot size on a county record includes the house, the driveway and the beds, so it can be twice the turf you actually cut.

How to price a mow by square footage

A common way to quote residential mowing is a rate per 1,000 square feet with a minimum charge per visit. Multiply the turf by your rate, and use the minimum if the result comes in under it. At $5 per 1,000 square feet, a 7,500 square foot lawn comes to $37.50, so a $40 minimum would make the price $40.

Square footage is only part of the job. Slopes, gates, tight spots and a lot of trimming all take longer than the size suggests. The mowing time calculator shows how long a lawn really takes with your mower, and the mowing price calculator turns that time into a price at your hourly rate.

Questions

Anything else, see support or email support@mowmapper.com.

Is this lawn measuring tool free?

Yes. There is no account, no email and no trial. Measure as many yards as you like.

How accurate is it?

The math is exact for the shape you draw, so the accuracy comes down to how closely you follow the edge of the grass. Zoom in, and add extra points along curves. Trees that hang over the lawn hide its edge in a satellite photo, so walk those spots if the number really matters.

Is anything saved?

No. Your shapes stay on the page and are gone when you leave it. Nothing you draw is sent to us.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in your phone’s browser. Pinch to zoom, then tap to place each point.

How many square feet are in an acre?

43,560. A quarter acre is 10,890 square feet, and a tenth of an acre is 4,356.

What does the Mow Mapper app do that this doesn’t?

This tool measures square footage. The app also marks beds, trees and fences, plans the mowing route, works out the mowing and trimming time for the deck you run, and saves it all to the customer and your schedule. It is $9.99 a month after a 7-day free trial.

Measure it, route it, get paid.

Mow Mapper measures the yard, plans the route, runs the crew’s day and sends the payment link. $9.99 a month after a 7-day free trial, and crew accounts are always free.
